Mikenti Oy Jypro has delivered an automatic extinguishing system to Metsä Fibre’s 30,000 sqm export terminal in Vuosaari port. The sprinkler system, designed to cover the special features of the building, secures the fire safety of the terminal building.

Vuosaari port’s freight traffic is growing strongly. Hundreds of thousands of containers pass through the port every year.

Metsä Fibre’s terminal hall is about 100 metres wide and 400 metres long, about the size of four football fields. The terminal was built as an export warehouse for pulp and other bioproducts. There is wood also in the building’s structures: sturdy beams supporting the roof, and the roof elements are also based on wood.

Fire safety supports the smoothness of logistics

The modern warehouse building and its yard are so large that major changes in operations and traffic routes have been implemented in the port area. The building’s technical solutions significantly enhance export logistics, and thus contribute to the competitiveness of industrial manufacturing.

The safety of the building also contributes to the smooth and reliable flow of goods. Mikenti Jypro’s designers have taken into account the special features of the terminal in the operation of the sprinkler system.

The temperature in the warehouse is the same as outside, which means that during winter months it is often near freezing. That’s why the sprinkler system can’t have water ready all the time either. Under normal circumstances, there is compressed air in the pipes. In the event of a fire, compressed air is released and water flows from the tanks instead. All this happens within about a minute after the system has detected a fire.

Twelve kilometers of piping

In addition to designing the system, Mikenti Jypro was also responsible for the installation of the sprinklers. The sprinkler installers used by the company are the best, experienced workers in their field. Mikenti Jypro is an installation company approved by Tukes.

There is plenty of work to be done on the roof line, as a total of twelve kilometers of sprinkler system pipelines were pulled into the warehouse.

And that’s not all. In addition, the contract includes a sprinkler supply network and a fire hydrant network that goes around the building. There are several kilometers of extinguishing water pipelines underground. The contract also included emergency fire hydrants, fire hydrants and hand fire extinguishers, a small truck took them to the site. The underground pipes will not freeze, because they are heated.

The site was planned almost ready during the bid calculation phase. Mikenti Jypro’s pre-fabrication factory in Jyväskylä, Finland, delivered all the pipes in the hall, so the amount of work done on the site was as limited as possible. This enabled a fast delivery schedule.
